Here's tonight's stream! Sorry about the poor audio mixing at the start, fortunately my viewers pointed that out so I could fix it a bit after around 20 minutes :)

We were messing around with trying to draw PICO-8 sprites for a garden at night and got an idea for how to animate sprites on the map with memcpy().

That's funny - we're subscribed to our own RSS feeds here for reasons, and we're noticing that CWed toots in Mastodon v3.1.3 are marked as "<sensitive>" in the subject lines of the RSS feed instead of, y'know, showing the CW.

I feel like that's not accurate to what CWs are used for in the communities we're in.

TIC-80 (idiosyncratic?) complaint

...typing "new" into the command line to get a new cartridge doesn't give you a blank cartridge

it gives you a cartridge that has a "hello world" program on it and sprites for that program in the sprite sheet

...this is genuinely upsetting to me, tbh

A self soothing technique

Sometimes I struggle so much with kindness towards myself that I almost have to step outside of me and role play that I am my own best friend. What would I say to her if she came to me with my own feelings? What would I do for her? How would I comfort her? Inspire her? Make space for her?

What are the ways that I can show kindness for everyone else in my life?

Pick the most appealing and doable one and then do that.

As of a moment ago, Ramus is also on Itch, complete with a release announcement cross-posted from this week's newsletter:

PICO-8 feels like the concept of "the medium is the message" put into practice. We keep remembering Joseph "zep" White's PRACTICE 2018 talk - - when we compare PICO-8 to other fantasy consoles, or game engines in general, and zep's focus on designing a design space.

Calling them fantasy consoles was a convenience of language. It was never about the fiction of imaginary machines.

what we see PICO-8 doing right as a fantasy console

1. It is designed, first and foremost, to be a tool that facilitates creativity through intentional constraints.

2. It is mostly well documented (SFX and music docs are lacking).

3. It is polished, with few bugs and good configuration features.

4. It is easy to share creations from, including via export to HTML5, and lightweight enough to run on low-end hardware.

5. It is easy to install and does not require separate libraries.

For those who want to join in on the , the minimal setup needed to get started with love2d and fennel has been updated!

It now includes the latest version of fennel, and set to work with the latest version of love2d (11.3) by default.

Big thanks to @technomancy for helping to solve the pesky issue where a second version of the fennel library would have to be included in the root directory!

The jam starts Friday morning (April 20th)

(I woulda been five minutes til deadline, but has the option to upload cover images and social media preview images and and favicons and so I made all of those happen because They Were There - ๐Ÿฆ)

Submitted with two minutes til deadline, but on time.

Probably a little sad? It's a very sincere little jam game, and I'm proud of it.

Actually, y'know what?

Go ahead and make suggestions, but there's a jam wrapping up today and I think we're gonna open up a stream and make something quick for it. is the jam, and we'll start streaming an hour-ish from now at on our Twitch account at .

Thinking about joining a game jam - I feel like we could use one. Any of our followers here or on got suggestions?

- ๐Ÿฆ ๐Ÿ’ญ ๐ŸŽฎ ๐Ÿ”ง

@gamemakingtools this is really funny but we can't see what we're typing and we make way too many typos to feel comfortable with that...

request for software testing re: PICO-8 rain gif cart

We had a thought I just tested, and on my Windows 7 (I know x__x) laptop, when I ran a binary exported by PICO-8 of our Rain Gif cart, the "save gif" option worked correctly.

Would anyone with other versions of Windows, on Linux, or on Mac be willing to test this out on their machines?

Made an entire cart for generating random PICO-8 fill pattern gradients.

Arrow keys to change direction of gradient in preview, z/[o] to copy hex codes for current gradient to the clipboard, x/[x] to generate a new one.

- ๐Ÿ

Show thread

Here's another, but starting from the checkerboard 50-50 gradient in the center and working outwards to the edges.

And accidentally ending up with diagonal lines, but keeping them.

Goes to show just how much expressiveness is possible in 4x4 binary fill patterns.

*looks at the gradient background*

*wonders what would happen if instead of having 5 intermediate stages between 0 and 16 pixels in the fill pattern, it had 15*

*cracks open and gets to work*

Decided to fiddle today with a "gleam of light reflecting off text" effect in - am considering using it in a project.

Hi! Game Making Social is a part of the Fediverse dedicated to being a well-moderated, cosy, friendly place to talk and share stuff about amateur videogame making, and everything surrounding that.

It's kinda an offshoot of Game Making Tools, which is a wiki(+) for a similar audience.

Game makers, game writers, game curators, etc. etc. most welcome!

I also try to maintain a list of not-jerk game-making communities on the wiki, which you might find interesting.

Please read the rules before signing-up :)

PS: We have Animal Crossing, LSD, and Klik & Play emoji :3
