Instance meta, rules

Masto's added a dedicated section for rules on the about/more page, so I'm using that as an excuse to revise things. If anyone has any notes or feedback on that page, this weekend would be a good time to make suggestions :)

I've added a new rules about deleting inactive accounts, so opinions RE that would be great.

freenode news

end of an era

> Freenode staff have stepped down. The network that runs at freenode.org/net/com should now be assumed to be under control of a malicious party. Andrew Lee will likely gain control over the NickServ database at some point.

SCI-HUB NEEDS YOUR HELP!

Do you have a few dozen gigabytes of free diskspace and a machine that can seed it via #bittorrent?

You can help save an unbelievable trough of scientific knowledge from disappearing behind the elites' paywalls!

Spread the word and seed till you bleed – for the betterment of humanity!

Don't think many people noticed :acnl_sad: but turns out the wiki was borked for a few weeks on Chromium-based browsers. Seems to be fixed now!

I just had a terrible idea. Would anyone in the fediverse be interested in a fedivision song contest?
And participating?
I... I think I would like that!

Decentralization is not about leaving google to go on protonmail.
Or making your website on wordpress' engine instead of wix.

It should have been about group of people getting a fun domain name with friends (let's say "meandmyfriends.net") and easily set things up to use it as their email domain. Or add a personal subdomain to create mywebsite.meandmyfriends.net the geocities way.

The couple of tools I released as of late also had a strategic goal: to seed a new section of the website. notimetoplay.org/graphics/

Question for folks who use screen-readers:

On a website or document, how would you prefer people to format a logical progression, for example in a software menu?

I often use the "greater than" symbol, like so: File > New > Text Document.

I've used in the past the arrow mad of two characters "->", but I suspect that might be appalling for screen-readers...

Which one(s) of these options do you prefer? Or something else as a reply if you want.

Boosts appreciated.

Looks like itch are taking hints from bandcamp and doing 100% royalty days, first one is next friday

I finally completed and published my little pixel art RPG pack on Itch!

polygonix.itch.io/16-fantasy-p

It *looks* like 16 little graphics, but to me it’s representative of losing use of my hands, being unsure what I could regain, and clawing back abilities over the past year.

I changed my Itch name form Freed Creative to Polygonix because I’m not in a position to use only FOSS anymore. Started these in Gimp and finished them in Pixaki.

So pleased to have bought this little project to fruition. 😀

I have encountered more image descriptions on Mastodon in 24 hours than I have in Twitter in a couple of years. Seriously. I'm not exaggerating.
As a blind person, this means a lot to me. If you read this and you describe your images, thank you so, so, so much on behalf of all of us. If you don't, now you know you'll be helping random Internet strangers make sense of your posts by typing in a few more words than usual.

Sonic Electronics in collaboration with IKLECTIK will present next 20 May an event dedicated to Female Noise Composers.

As a network of sound artists, sonic practices, noise, computer music, audiovisual projects we are always looking for experimental works. If you have a new project that shows how computing has enhanced your performance, please contact us for the next event in June 2021.

Our aim is to play with challenging modes of computing that defy corporative, commercial software driven by profit.

We are calling to projects developed with open source operative systems and handmade / DIY software.
