@ArtistMarciaX Yuuuuuuup. And also like, how is striving for the Universal in our works valuable? Like, are we just talking about universal appeal? If so, isn't that just blandness? The least offensive taste wins? And what if that blandness offends ME, the Artist? No thank you.

Work is progressing on this so I feel a bit more comfortable talking about it. The first release will just be the album's first track, "Cliffs", paired with a single level from the game. I'll update the mod each time I do a new track/level.
Rather than normal or enemy-less play, each track will be a series of choreographed camera shots/moves, like machinima except you can look around freely. The idea is to "be" in these spaces, in the *context* of the music.

I've been able to do this entirely with level scripting. However I soon realized that a level editor (Hammer) wasn't helping much for this kind of work, so I wrote some Python to generate map entity data which is then patched in during map load. I scout out and frame the shots in-game flying around in noclip mode, then paste the output of the "getpos" console command into a data table where I can define everything about a shot.
None of this requires (plat-specific) C++ mod code, which was my aim

good post about how nerd communities' mass-adoption of the closed and proprietary Discord platform will inevitably lead to the long-term loss of (or loss of access to) mountains of special-interest group knowledge and community history

Dear design and gamedev mastofriends: Do you know of any map/tile/level editor which supports vector graphics?

They seem like a great tool for grid-based designs, but all game map editors I found work with bitmaps, not vector/SVG.

Is there any such tool?

My most recent open source project:

Prevent short link services from tracking you and remove tracking parameters from the underlying urls.

You can 100% host it yourself and its #GPLv3

Call For Submissions: Gay Ennui Periodical F/W 2019, a new grayscale zine to feature work by gay, bi, pan, queer, trans, nb, etc. creators* about gayness (and, y'know, the rest of that list), ennui, or both!

8.5x11" format, pagefold and margins leave four 4.25"x7" areas for pure text per sheet- or I can print images to the bleed! I accept layouts (in correct proportions) or I can do the formatting on plaintext/bare images. If you can give me your work in a form printable on one or two such pages, I am happy to accept your work in any media, until space/time/resources demand editorial discretion.

Contributor pay is $5, and possibly more if this is a wild success; paying contributors is my first priority upon sales, sorry, this project is super bootleg.

Submission deadline is November 15th, 2019, but there may be room for flexibility.

Email me questions or submissions at, or contact me elsewhere!

Oh wow, #Gitea is finally getting #kanban boards. I've been waiting for this so I can #selfhost both repositories and code-unrelated to-do lists (currently using #Trello for the latter) in one place. #mc

Playscii and the value of making bespoke/niche tools at Roguelike Celebration

Just thought of an old gem from years ago. #arss (The Analysis & Resynthesis Sound Spectrograph) is a CLI program that converts images to and from waveforms. I enjoyed playing around with it back in the day.

Apparently it's been superseded by a paid GUI version by the same author, but the original is GPL and thus still free. Check it out:

It's time to Môsi:

Just uploaded the 1.0 release to It's a tool for creating little game worlds in your mobile or desktop browser, heavily inspired by Bitsy!

I'd really like to focus on adding more audio tools to the wiki, especially Linux ones.

Recently started on pages for some new graphics tools:

- Glimpse, the Gnu IMP fork
- Noodle, a 1-bit drawing program
- Dotgrid, a simple vector program

These are all very Fediverse-related too!

Hi! Game Making Social is a part of the Fediverse dedicated to being a well-moderated, cosy, friendly place to talk and share stuff about amateur videogame making, and everything surrounding that.

It's kinda an offshoot of Game Making Tools, which is a wiki(+) for a similar audience.

Game makers, game writers, game curators, etc. etc. most welcome!

I also try to maintain a list of not-jerk game-making communities on the wiki, which you might find interesting.

Please read the rules before signing-up :)

PS: We have Animal Crossing, LSD, and Klik & Play emoji :3
